Having read this many times to Year 4 and 5 children I can guarantee that it is a hit! The opening is just brilliant! Dahl gives the audience the clues to spot a witch - always wears gloves, scratches their head a lot because they have to wear wigs etc. - then asks them to look carefully at their teacher who is reading the book to see if she is witch! Wear gloves for the first reading - the children love it! Sorry, but doesn't work for male teachers I'm afraid!
The story itself is very tense. A boy's parents have died, he lives with his gran and when they are on holiday in England they find that they are in the company of witches - who are quite frightening! Another brilliant read aloud by Dahl.
Warning - check that the topic of witches is suitable before reading.
